Programme Structure

HKDSE students who are interested in studying IT-related programmes can enroll to either the Department of Applied Mathematics (under the Faculty of Science), the Department of Computing or the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (both are under the Faculty of Engineering). For Department of Applied Mathematics, students are admitted to the BSc (Hons) Scheme in Data Science and will take a common set of subjects in their first year. In the second year, they can select to study the BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Analytics (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme) (Note: Another undergraduate programme under the Scheme is BSc (Hons) in Investment Science and Finance Analytics. Moreover, students could opt for studying a Secondary Major which features an expanded area of studies in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.). For Department of Computing, students are admitted to the BSc (Hons) Scheme in Computing and AI. In the first year, admitted students study a common set of subjects to lay their foundation to university study, and a taste of the broad discipline. In the second year, they can select the individual awards, including the BSc (Hons) in Computer Science (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme), the BSc (Hons) in Enterprise Information Systems (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme), and the BSc (Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme) (Note: This award will be managed by Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence with effect from 1 July 2024.), and study the corresponding content. All three awards feature the minor option, with placement with local or overseas companies in the fourth year and an individual or a group integrative capstone project in the final year. For Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, students are admitted to the BEng (Hons)/BSc (Hons) Scheme in Information and Artificial Intelligence Engineering and study together during the first year. And then complete their preferred programme, i.e. the BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme), the BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Information Engineering (government-funded, School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme), or the BSc (Hons) in Information Security (government-funded, School Nomination Direct Admission Scheme) (Note: This programme is offered in collaboration with the Department of Computer.), normally within three years. For these programmes, students can choose to join a One-year Internship Scheme to receive industrial training for one year according to their interest and planning after Year 3. After the industrial training year, the students will then resume study in Year 5 in full time again.

Internship Opportunities

All PolyU’s undergraduate programmes include a mandatory Work-integrated Education (WIE) component.

List of companies participating in the placement / internship programmes:

Students of Department of Applied Mathematics are expected to take discipline-related internship, e.g. investment, finance, data analysis, programming, etc., for at least 120 hours. Through the internship, students would gain hands-on working experience and receive on-the-job training which will enhance their professional competence, the ability of independent thinking, effective communication skills and develop a global outlook.
