Good afternoon! It is my pleasure to join you today for the Award Presentation and Closing Ceremony for the “Generative AI and AIoT (GenAIoT) Coding Skills Education for Gifted Students”. First of all, I would like to extend my sincere appreciations to all participating students for their hard work over the past few months, as well as my heartfelt congratulations to the awardees of the Student Project Final Competition for their outstanding accomplishments. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) for organising this meaningful education programme to our elite students.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping our world, guiding sectors toward new possibilities. As we embrace this technological renaissance, fostering a culture of technological literacy and innovation is essential. The skills you have developed in this program will be crucial as you navigate the digital landscape.
Looking ahead, AI will transform industries and drive innovation. It will enhance the global economy, changing how we live and work. This transformative power brings remarkable opportunities as well as challenges that we must face together. As potential future contributors to this field, understanding the benefits and the responsibilities of this technology is of importance.
With great power comes great responsibility. The ethical implications of AI are substantial and must not be ignored. As you explore your interests in technology and consider future careers in this field, it is crucial to approach this powerful tool with care. Ethical issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and employment impact require your thoughtful engagement. As you leverage AI capabilities, prioritising ethical practices is essential to ensure technology benefits humanity positively and inclusively.
The Government is committed to building a dynamic AI ecosystem in Hong Kong. Cyberport is making strides in constructing Hong Kong’s first large-scale AI Supercomputing Centre (AISC) to meet the growing demands for computing power from research institutions and industries. The first phase of this center will soon be operational, establishing it as one of the region’s largest computing facilities. This development will provide invaluable resources for researchers and innovators alike.
Talent is also a critical foundation for AI development. In his 2024 Policy Address, the Chief Executive announced that the Education Bureau would establish a “Steering Committee on Strategic Development of Digital Education.” This committee will focus on enhancing digital education, updating the Junior Secondary Science Curriculum, and supporting teachers in integrating AI into their lessons. These initiatives aim to strengthen STEAM education in primary and secondary schools and contribute significantly to Hong Kong’s long-term innovation and technology talent pool.
The Generative AI and AIoT Coding Skills Education for Gifted Students Programme embodies this vision perfectly. It has provided participating secondary students with unique opportunities to explore Generative AI, AI Internet of Things (AIoT), and advanced engineering concepts. Students have gained invaluable insights and practical skills in cutting-edge technologies, paving their way to become future leaders in AI talent within Hong Kong.
I want to acknowledge our dedicated educators, mentors, and program organisers. Your commitment has been instrumental in shaping these young innovators’ futures. You have illuminated their paths while instilling values of ethics and determination.
To our promising students: you are the hope and future of Hong Kong. The knowledge and skills you have gained will help you achieve greater things. As you move forward in your journeys, remember that your education prepares you to tackle real-world challenges. Stay curious, collaborate with others, and use your creativity to apply what you have learned for a positive impact on society.
In closing, I congratulate all students once again and express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this program. I have every confidence that you will be at the forefront of creating a better, smarter, and more inclusive world.
